Studio Update: Under Construction

There is always a multitude of things being produced in the studio.  It’s fun to watch the process, as even the bits and pieces under construction are lovely.

For example, we print our own ribbon (as well as printing pretty much anything that doesn’t move), which gets chopped up to make labels in our garments .

On a pretty piece of fabric I spied a neatly stacked row of bows for our Bebe top.

Below are bits and pieces of printed leather for new Good Wallets.  As I write this I can hear the whir of a sewing machine, stitching the components together.

Above are printed leather pieces for Easy Daisy wallets.

We never stand still here at Smoking Lily, we’re always creating something new. Keep an eye out in our stores and on our website for all of our new items.

1940′s Hairstyle

As I was browsing through Youtube, looking for 1940′s hairstyles to wear for the Tweed Ride, I came across this video. It’s an informational video encouraging women to wear their hair back when working in factories and assembly plants.  It also mentions why they needed to wear as little fabric, trim, and buttons as possible.

I thought it had some interesting insights into the fashions of the day.

Sunny Day, Sunshine-y Tunes

The weather gods have finally taken pity on us soggy West Coasters; we are currently on day three–day three!!–of lovely weather, and I couldn’t be happier. I don’t know why, but sunshine, bike riding, and cherry blossoms blowing in the breeze always puts this happy little dittie by the Toronto solo project, Diamond Rings, in my head. Don’t you just want to give him a hug? And, really, how sunny is that!

Have a gloriously bright and happy Wednesday, everyone.

Van Halen

This may surprise some of you, it definitely surprised me, but, I was an audience member at the Van Halen concert, in Vancouver, last night.  I was cajoled into going by some fun cousins of mine, whom I haven’t had the opportunity to spend much time with.  I laughed for two days straight that opportunity decided to knock for the Van Halen concert.  I was never a fan of the band, but my sister was, so I figured I know a few of the songs and have fun at the family outing.  Of course, the outcome was a big yes, to both of those circumstances.

Here are a few photos from the evening:

a drum solo (Alex rocked it out)…

a guitar solo (Eddie was in fine form and was so happy it was infectious)…

a David solo (he’s still a ridiculously flamboyant frontman – I didn’t get a good shot of him as he was flittering about the stage)…

a great fan sighting (I was snapping some funny t-shirts when I accidentally caught the kooky fan in the background – love the neon bandaid too)…

and the grand finale (with no encore – I love that!!)…

Thanks Doug for the funniest family reunion ever!

glenda.

p.s. I have to say that, in recollecting a dream I had zillion years ago, I’m happy that the Van Halen dude I connected with was Eddie – he’s still the coolest – tee hee.

Tweed Capes

Jana, shown in the photo below, asked me to let you know that she has several printed tweed capes, at the Johnson St. shop, which would be perfect for the Tweed Ride.  They are on sale now, for only $60.

She also wanted me to remind you that we have bow ties!

Happy riding!
